A Mis-wired History Of Mo-Cap Leaves Out Jar Jar

October 28, 2017

Wired posted a video with Andy Serkis about the history of motion capture technology that left out our buddy Jar Jar.  When Ahmed Best got wind of this he wasn’t happy and neither were a bunch of other fans:

A few people on Twitter grumbled this had to do with racism but I think it boils down to a simple fact and that is Wired has always hated the prequels and Jar Jar. But it’s great to see for once some pushback.

Fon Davis Reddit AMA

October 26, 2017

Visual effects artist Fon Davis, whose work includes the Special Editions and the prequels among many other films, did an AMA session on Reddit today.  Not a lot of stuff about the prequels specifically but still some interesting tidbits from somebody who was a part of them.  Plus a cameo from former Mythbuster Adam Savage.

Star Words AOTC Part 5

October 26, 2017

This time it’s one of those foreshadowing moments:

Ouch. But seen in the context of Obi-Wan’s current mindset, it’s one of those exasperated parent-like things to say. He’s saying it almost flippantly, perhaps not aware of how much it stings Anakin. “Don’t say that, Master. You’re the closest thing I have to a father.” And Anakin has always yearned for a father. He hoped to find a surrogate in Qui-Gon, but that didn’t work out. Obi-Wan, alas, is never able to find quite the right footing as a father figure. He ends up behaving more like an older brother, as evidenced by the competition and impatience and snarking. Anakin ends up finding a different father figure….who just happens to be a conniving Sith Lord. Alas indeed.

Are There Prequel Fans In High Places?

October 20, 2017

Joel passed along this latest video from Collider’s Jedi Council.  Normally I avoid it because it’s been a prequel bashfest but not so much with this group.  What’s interesting is what they reveal about Kathleen Kennedy:

The relevant bit is about 26 minutes in and it goes on about two or three minutes.

Hmm.

Will Ep. IX “Tie It All Together?”

October 19, 2017

Well, that’s what some Redditor claims:

Apparently they’ve had no interference from Kathleen or Pablo or the Lucasfilm Story Group. 9 is also the film which unites all three trilogies and brings everything together. That’s all they would tell me.”

“I worry a little bit that the questions I was asking were too leading. I was speaking to Chris and he was talking about the OT. I said about how I grew up with the PT and the prequels were my entry point into Star Wars. I asked about elements of the PT coming into 9 and Chris said about how 9 unites all of it. He said 9 definitely makes it feel like they’re all happening in the same universe, and there would be PT elements in 9. They could be visual or thematic – he didn’t overtly say that there would be returning planets or characters from the PT or anything.”

We’ll see about that. Just the other day I asked myself if the prequels added depth and dimension to the OT, what will the sequels add to the previous six besides “more stuff?”

Star Words AOTC Part 4

October 19, 2017

Obi-Wan’s attempt at reassurance is loaded with irony:

Not these dreams; not for Anakin. Not until the awful future they are foretelling has come to pass. I’m not sure if Obi-Wan has any idea that they might be visions or premonitions. Would that change his response? Maybe not, as the Jedi are so strictly forbidden from having emotional attachments. Maybe he really would advise Anakin to ignore the visions and not concern himself with his mother’s fate. But I can’t quite believe he would be so fully cold-hearted. He seems sincerely sympathetic in this scene as they discuss the dreams tormenting Anakin’s mind. But he also seems to believe that his advice will be enough to console him. “Dreams pass.” And it’s clearly not enough.

Buzzfeed’s “21 Photos That Prove 1999 Was The Greatest Year For Star Wars Fans”

October 17, 2017

Not that I think much of Buzzfeed or the dim bulbs who hang around there, but somebody posted a whole bunch of photos from the spring and summer of 1999 depicting the mania surrounding TPM’s release.  Of course the comments are full of bashers, so feel free to add balance to the Force.

By the way, I was acquainted with a number of people who were involved with the Uptown Theater line up.

Update:  Buzzfeed changed the title of the story a day later.  Losers.
