Anatomy Of A Fight Scene Essay

August 29, 2017

The Star Wars Prequels blog posted a breakdown of AOTC’s fight scene between Jango Fett and Obi-Wan on Kamino:

Williams score conveys to us clearly the peril that Obi-Wan finds him in by the use of shrill violins and brass horns and as Jango begins to be dragged further towards the edge by his weight we are imparted a real sense of tension. Eventually Jango summons the composure to reach over to his arm and detach the cable. Obi-Wan, is released alongside Williams’ score back into its previous frenetic rhythm as he free falls to the waters.

Hot Toys Anakin Up For Pre-Order

August 29, 2017

Sideshow is putting up Hot Toys’ glorious Anakin Skywalker sixth scale figure for pre-order.  It’s expensive–$235–but you can opt for a payment plan over 2-4 months with a small down payment.  I opted for a three month payment plan of about $71 a month over a three month period.

On Comments

August 28, 2017

I try very hard to make SWPAS into something other than a cesspool and for the most part, it isn’t.

However, working on this site for almost 10 years has shown me that prequel haters and bashers aren’t the only problem I’ve had to worry about.  In fact, they have been less and less of an issue except for a big flare up on the FB page around the time TFA came out.   What I’ve noticed over the past couple of years have been some aggressive visitors to the site who seem to want to use it as their soapbox for their agenda (easier and less time consuming I suppose than starting one’s own blog, podcast, or channel).  They’ve been disrespectful to me and to other visitors and when I call them on it, they get hostile.  I’ve had to ban a few from commenting and some will do things like come up with socks or change their IPs to get around moderation.  This behavior is unacceptable.  I catch anyone doing that, they are done commenting here, period.

I’m also done with feeling like a babysitter.  I’m not a social worker or a mental health specialist.  If the situation doesn’t change I may close SWPAS to comments sometime in the near future.

Star Words: We Are Your Humble Servants

August 24, 2017

Matril’s Star Words series reaches Queen Amidala’s big diplomatic moment:

This is a big deal, to put it mildly. When Boss Nass criticized the Naboo previously, he was expressed contempt of their arrogance, of their presumption of superiority over the Gungans. For the queen to lower herself — to literally kneel before the bosses — is to offer a direct contradiction to that presumption. We are not better than you; perhaps we are not even equals. Without you, we are nothing.

And the specific wording is even more important. Remember when Qui-Gon first encounters Jar Jar and saves his life? Jar Jar immediately declares, “Meesa your humble servant.” The exact same phrase. For all we know, it might be the ritualistic words required of a Gungan entering into a life-debt.

I Critique The Her Universe “’50s Inspired” Line

August 22, 2017

Sold at conventions, on HU’s website, and on Box Lunch, the new midcentury-inspired line of cardigans, dresses, and skirts focus on different planets from the Star Wars lexicon. Strangely enough, there’s a broader planet-inspired line that overlaps this one with more contemporary or ‘70s inspired styles.

I am only going to focus on what I bought: the Naboo cardigan ($44.92), the Naboo skirt ($37.42), the Endor dress ($44.92), and the “SW” initial cardigan ($33.67). The other items in the line weren’t age appropriate or fit in with my lifestyle.

I made the mistake of buying the Endor dress at SDCC without trying it on. Normally I’m a small in HU sizes so I just assumed this would fit just fine. I took it home and while the skirt part fit okay, the bodice and waistband were really small and I couldn’t zip up the dress all of the way. Unfortunately they did not permit exchanges at the con; had I just bought it on the website or from Box Lunch, I could’ve gotten an exchange or refund. Caveat emptor the next time you go to a con! It’s too bad because otherwise the dress is really cute. I liked the black and lavender trim color scheme and the skirt print has adorable drawings of Ewoks and trees. If you want to buy this dress and you’re bigger than an A-cup, go up at least one size.

The good news is that the Naboo cardigan and skirt fit, also purchased at the con, fit. The former is a pretty peach color with the royal crest printed all over it and embroidered on the left chest, with faux pearl buttons. It’s nice enough to wear to work or to dress up any outfit. It fits true to size though the style is slightly cropped. The skirt is decorated with drawings of Naboo’s famous “sites,” including Theed and Varykino, plus there’s a drawing of Anakin and Padme on their picnic date. It’s a more subtle style and it is a mid-length skirt, making it appropriate for work. Plus it’s got pockets! The only issue is that there’s no elastic on the waistband. If you’ve bought similar skirts from ModCloth, this fits about the same way. If you have a wider waist, then go up a size. This is a great piece for fangirls of all ages. Since I’m a huge A/P shipper I call it the greatest skirt of all time!

Finally, I bought the SW cropped cardigan from Box Lunch. It might seem pretty plain (it’s designed to go with an AT-AT poodle skirt that’s cute, but costume-y) but it’s a subtle way to show your fandom. This one fits true to size.

Note:  Prices reflect an ongoing promotion/sale at Box Lunch and Her Universe’s site.

So, What’s Up With This Obi-Wan Movie?

August 17, 2017

Today The Hollywood Reporter published a claim that Stephen Daldry is being considered to direct a standalone film focusing on Obi-Wan.  The film has NOT yet been announced by Lucasfilm so it’s not official but generally THR and Variety are pretty plugged in with what’s going on.  (I think they are getting their info from talent agents.)  The report emphasizes that there’s no script yet so nobody has been signed but it’ll get ugly fast if it doesn’t involve Ewan McGregor.

Both THR and Variety are also reporting that Lucasfilm still wants standalones about Yoda, Boba Fett, and (for God’s sake why) Jabba the Hutt.

More of my .02 on this…it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with.  The Maul/Obi-Wan rematch was already done on Rebels so it won’t be in the film.  I doubt you’ll have an entire movie of Obi-Wan haggling with Jawas or arm wrestling Sand People.  Still there is stuff you can do, like Obi-Wan flash backing to his earliest days at the Temple, communing with Qui-Gon (dude, if Liam Neeson comes back too I’ll explode), or bailing Luke out of jail for underage drinking before Uncle Owen finds out.  We’ll see.  But these reports will force Lucasfilm’s hand into confirming or denying this project very soon.
