’s Themes In ROTS

Dan Zehr wraps up the prequels with his look at the themes in ROTS:

Much can be said of Palpatine’s duality, which becomes personified once he is transformed cosmetically in his chambers during a fatal duel with Mace Windu. The lightning deflected from Mace’s purple blade disfigures Palpatine into a hideous monster. While Palpatine face is scarred, it is merely a representation of the twisted psyche of the future Emperor of the Galactic Empire. He changes before Anakin from a kindly, wise, human mentor, into a tour de force of evil. This outward change is merely a facade, to mask the duality of the individual. This dual nature helps Palpatine wreck havoc on the unsuspecting galaxy.

Figuratively speaking – Palp’s disfigurement also symbolizes the demon within – his mask is taken off and we see his evil soul.

  2. Hoggle Says:

Palpatine was a mask work by Sidious (who is known as Emperor Palpatine).

There are many reasons for this. He still needed some subtlety in turning Anakin, keeping Anakin’s trust. But he wanted to reveal himself in his moment of triumph, to be a Sith for all to see, so the force lightnin deflection gave an alibi. Vader got zapped by some lightning fatally in his helmet that reverberated inside, yet had no lightning deformities. Luke also got a good frying with no deformities. The face of Sidious had alot of new symmetry about it, not like from random lightning deformity in the face. We’ve seen changling abilities in AoTCs.

Also the duel with Windu: Anakin said Mace would need his help, Palpatine was very powerful. Anakin knew that Mace was powerful. It is Palpatine who deliberately slashes into the window. Palpatine is very strong in his foresight in the PT. He’s 100% confident that Anakin will be his new apprentice. He’s obviously faking about being defeated and broken to Mace Windu for Anakin’s benefit. He faked about being defenseless to Luke RoTJ. I don’t think Windu’s defeat of Palpatine was due to overpowering or getting the better of Palpatine.

Once Anakin executed Dooku, Palpatine had enough Sith influence and connection with Anakin to telepathically send Anakin his first Padme nitemare, & then via telepathy keep on feeding that fear as Anakin latched onto it in successive nitemares and thoughts.

Palptine’s abilities in the force, were only outmatched in confrontations in the first six GL films by Leia, who was only starting to develop. Leia was Palpatine’s phantom menace. OT Yoda, could have probably whooped Palpatine in a one on one though.

That’s some GL six film SE & PT saga fandom for ya right there that is 🙂

Agreed… Palpatine was Sidious’ mask. And yes, Palpatine deliberately slashes into the window. I also agree that he was faking weakness to Anakin in order to pull him in all the way. Palpatine orchestrated everything that happened to Padme in order to get Anakin to join him on the Dark Side.

In my fanfiction I have Luke end up with heart problems due to being zapped by Palpatine on the second Death Star.

Hehe, it kinda follows Palpatine …. some good fandom to be had in that fanfic story i think 🙂

If you’re referring to my fanfic, yes. It was read and loved by hundreds of people, was also read on a SW fan radio site too. I even got a phone call from John Chapman who played a star pilot in the original movie. He heard my story narrated and called me from England in order to tell me how much he liked it. That completely blew me away! It’s not every day you get a phone call from and actor in Star Wars! 🙂

That’s quite an endorsement. I live in fear any of the SW actors finding my fan fic ;).

      • susanbowes Says:

Your fan fic can’t be that bad. I’ve read some pretty terrible SW stories that really suck, and published by Del-Rey no less, OMG! You wouldn’t believe how stupid they were. I couldn’t get past the first page! Your fan fic HAS to be better than those ones!

I think she is referring to suggestive content regarding actors’ characters contained within said fan fiction. I think it best to leave it at that.

      • lazypadawan Says:

Not everything I’ve written is like that; a lot isn’t. But I had to laugh when I’d seen pictures of the “50 Shades Of Grey” author hanging out with Robert Pattinson. I mean, does he know those books were Twilight fan fiction? Has he read them? It’s kind of horrifying to think about.
