Teen Girls And The Prequels

Remember the fan who was looking for female fans who were teenagers during the prequel era?

She completed her piece here. I don’t agree with all of her points but she has lots of quotes from fans and it’s true a lot of young women/girls got into the fandom subculture during those years, including LOTR and Harry Potter fandoms.

Interestingly, the first character to appear in TPM (and thus in the chronological order of SW films) was female.

I found it an insightful article overall, especially highlighting what aspects female fans were most drawn to and how they express their interests. I also now have a new term to use – “fandom gatekeeping”. I often would apply the term “geek mafia” when I would see evidence of certain segments of fandom trying to shut down or bully another, but “gatekeeping” is another apt term!
