This Is Madness: Stop The Insanity

I wasn’t sure to post this here or on my other page but since this gets more eyeballs and it is relevant to SWPAS, it’s going here.

Every year for the past couple of years or so, has been running a March Madness-type popularity contest with several Star Wars characters culled from the films, Clone Wars, and Rebels. It’s only meant to be fun. But even simple fun is no longer possible with a fandom and an internet full of jerks out to ruin it for everybody.

I don’t know in years past, but this year has had outright tampering with the polls or ballot-stuffing. It came to a head yesterday or the day before when 4chan decided to interfere with the race between Padmé and Jar Jar (now that’s a bizarre match-up), giving Jar Jar a huge, huge lead over Padmé. 4chan’s goal was to make sure Jar Jar ends up in the finals or at least the final two along with Bib Fortuna in the name of “butthurt.”

This is uncomfortable for me because Jar Jar does have more fans out there than many people believe, but at the same time, many Padmé fans were mad as hell. (“Misogyny” got tossed around a lot on Tumblr.) Which is why I think this year’s “This Is Madness” really needs to be the last.

This is already a divided, even hostile fandom with fault lines as deep as the Marianna Trench. This popularity poll just throws gasoline onto the flames. Female fans complain that female characters don’t fare well. Cartoon fans hate that their favorites are usually beat out by movie characters. Movie fans get upset if anyone not “cool” enough beats one of their guys. What are they going to do with more NEW characters being introduced with a rapid succession of new films? Are they going to start excluding cartoon characters, upsetting the cartoon fans? Are they going to start dumping prequel characters?

We can’t have nice things, call it a day.

Bonus:  Gabi has some screen caps on her Tumblr.  Hey, thanks for the shoutout 4chan!

My only issue with this is if there were not ‘bots involved in voting I don’t know how you can call a Jar Jar win invalid. There’s nothing wrong with mobilizing a bunch of people online to vote for Jar Jar, an many of the geek sites run by the adies have actively lobbied for characters like Leia and Ahsoka.

Hold your rontos! Jar Jar was Padme’s AIDE. They were the Han and Chewie of Naboo. Together they brought peace to Gungans and Naboo. Together they kicked the Trade Federation’s butt! Where’s the logic in pitting one against the other?

  3. blade57hrc Says:

I disagree on stopping the contest…Because of JarJar’s win (even though i think the votes are reviewed and it’s not certain)!

I really felt uplifted by all the comments in support of JarJar and many people basically saying ”enough with those OT-elitists” in the comments! And not just kids but people my age and older!

Don’t get me wrong, i love Padme…but watching the supposedly ”worst”character in movie history going as high as possible is seen like a big ”f**k you” to the haters by many people, imo!Even the ones who don’t like the character itself!

    P.S. Better ”firewall”?yes on that.

Sorry for the detour, but I found hilarious the statement “Because we all know how it is with the most viciously vocal members of the Star Wars fandom, don’t we? Gargle the balls of the precious Original trilogy and never dare enjoy Star Wars in any other way than that prescribed by the purists… or else!”. Still not sure why such vitriol persists in the SW fan community.

That’s not the only deal – Pablo H was actively promoting the process and the outcome.

  6. lovelucas Says:

Adding – I read all of Pablo’s on site diaries and there was barely hidden animosity towards Natalie but she later acknowledged and was sorry for her attitude.

Yes the voting scripts appear to skew the results, but they are removed by the StarWars .com before announcing the results. They can filter out the voting scripts be only registering one vote per IP address and by filtering out votes that ring up in exact time intervals between each vote (scripted voting). The scripted voting would have had Nute Gunray (who I would have liked to see win) beating out Admiral Piett in the Play-ins by nearly 40 percent. After they fixed the votes to allow for the scripts however, Gunray lost fair and square and Piett moved ahead.

So, yes, they should try to make it impossible to run the scripts by making the voting more secure in the first place. BUT, they have already demonstrated the ability to easily filter out the scripted votes AFTER the fact, so I see no reason to cancel an otherwise fun contest. Also, I love the “Watto weighs in” section on each match-up and would be saddened to see that go away. A few toxic, misogynous people on reddit and 4chan and other dark corners of the Internet should not be able to ruin a contest for everyone. So, really all they need to do is make the voting a little more secure right up front rather than having to fix it after the fact.

The results aren’t even up on either of my devices. It’s just blank, with no winner, and moving onto the next match.

As I’ve stated before, but making the implicit explicit: I am team Jar Jar all the way because A) He’s my personal favorite character, B) it makes a MUCH bigger statement for us I-III fans if he wins, C) IF he wins, Lucasfilm’s reaction will be a good gauge of what we can expect going forward (i.e. if they embrace it or blame it on trolls and refuse to accept it).

But I say again right here and now that Padmé deserves it just as much. Padmé is more likely to appear again – she’s been here every time as far as I remember – and I will be Team Padmé all the way if they do this again with her. I’d also be happy with Ahsoka.

But just getting Jar Jar on the ballot this year was something I thought was impossible, and I still think it’s unlikely to happen ever again. I really want to express that just because I’m taking advantage of this opportunity to drum up support for Jar Jar and make our voices heard, it doesn’t mean I think any of our other main characters are in any way unimportant.

Is it too late to try and booster Qui Gon? He’s a pure PT character, he’s Liam Neeson, and he’s just plain cool.

      • peacetrainjedi Says:

Liam Neeson/Qui-Gon transcends this contest 🙂

Qui-Gon already lost to Yoda, who is up against Obi-Wan now. (Obi is currently winning). No worries though; they’re all friends.

      • Bob Clark Says:

Man. One year somebody has to rig it for Qui Gon. He’s somebody all TPM fans can get behind without it being some kind of dumbass prank. And even if it is a dumbass prank, at least it’s also a badass one.

      • Adam D. Bram (The Nilbog) Says:

I would argue any TPM character is a character us fans can get behind without it being a prank. Any AotC or RotS character too.

Hell, I would legitimately and honestly be on Team Elan Sleazebaggano if it came to that (and I don’t care about Lucasfilm renaming him “Sel’Sabagno”, it’s Sleazebaggano, dammit!).

  9. madmediaman Says:

Still no announcement some four days after the fact… curious.

  10. Adam D. Bram (The Nilbog) Says:

    Hey, Anakin won kind of.
