Dave Filoni On “Rise of the Old Masters,” Ahsoka, Etc.

IGN has a spoilery interview with Dave Filoni concerning last night’s aired episode of “Rebels,” Ahsoka, sensing the Force, and other stuff you might find interesting. Like this:

A lot has been made of our ties to the original trilogy, but I am not a Star Wars fan that would ever ignore the prequel trilogy. Let’s face it, it’s been my bread and butter for the last decade. I love the prequel era. So it’s important to show, as much as how the Empire built up, what it destroyed and it destroyed a lot of these characters and they got caught up in it.

What he said about the PT is a far cry from what Simon Kinberg said.

Put Dave in charge and forget the rest of these clowns (I.e., Whitta, Kinberg, etc.)

Question: is anyone impressed with “Rebels” so far? I was listening to Full of Sith and they said that the show isn’t doing so well ratings-wise partly because of the way Disney is marketing the show.

I’ve been merely “interested” so far, but this last episode actually had me invested.

‘Rise of the Old Masters’ is certainly an impressive episode. Its depiction of the relationship between Kanan and Ezra hearkens back to the Master-Padawan relationships depicted in the PT and TCW. Even Kanan’s attempt to fob his new apprentice off on Luminara Unduli, motivated by his lack of faith in his own abilities as a Jedi, calls to mind Obi-Wan and Anakin.

It has less in the way of nostalgic homages and witty banter and more of the core themes that make Star Wars what it is. It seems authentic in a way that prior episodes aren’t, as enjoyable as they often are.

Rise of the Old Masters is the only one that’s watchable so far. And it still doesn’t hold a candle to TCW. It doesn’t even rival other good Disney XD shows like Gravity Falls. Right now, it’s just treading water at best.

They’re great! I’ve watched each episode more than once and I they have a lot of possibilities to explore. There’s a touch of PT in every episode. Breaking Ranks is another winner and has a nice reference to ‘pod racer parts’. It’s little touches like that, or references to ‘laser sword’ (only in TPM prior) that I find are a nice wink and nod to the PT lovers. I hope the show has a nice run and I’d love to see the series wrap up by having the crew involved in stealing the Death Star plans.
