Undeniable Fact About AOTC #13: It Was The First Star Wars Film Released Worldwide The Same Day

TPM’s staggered release in 1999 encouraged fans outside of the U.S. who couldn’t wait a few months to book flights and hotel rooms to catch the film on May 19.

But “Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Fellowship of the Ring” changed the game with blockbuster releases. Both films were released the same day worldwide, at least in all of the big movie markets. So AOTC was unleashed globally on May 16, 2002. Because of the time differences, that meant Australians got to see the movie first. Today, not only are simultaneous global release dates the norm for blockbusters, some of them are released a week or two in Europe, the UK, Australia, and China before they open in North America.
