The Merch Scouting Mission At SDCC

I didn’t go to the licensee panels at this year’s SDCC. I’ve sat through some before and unless you’re Philip Wise, those panels are kind of boring. It’s a lot easier to read others’ reports and do a little scouting in the exhibit hall. Especially with rumors that licensees were being ordered to toss the prequels into the memory hole.

As you might have surmised from reading reports on Hasbro’s panel, Hasbro isn’t completely forgetting about Eps I-III or Clone Wars. I saw the Black Series figures for Obi-Wan and Anakin. The Anakin one looks great. You can switch out Happy Anakin’s head for Angry Anakin’s head.

New licensee Hot Wheels will soon issue mini cars based on the six Star Wars films, Clone Wars, and Rebels as Walmart exclusives. The TPM one is painted like Anakin’s pod racer! This will be a fun set to collect.

Some headphone company had a booth in the Lucasfilm “pavilion,” and they are going to produce plates with characters and artwork from all of the films that you can switch out with the ones that come with your headphone.

Hallmark really ended up on my #$@# list with this convention, but not for the reasons you think. Anyway, they are going to produce a Darth Vader ROTS ornament for next year, I guess to commemorate the film’s 10th anniversary.

Sideshow Collectibles had some awesome albeit expensive clone trooper figures and a terrific albeit expensive Savage Oppress figure. Gentle Giant had its planned Premium Membership gifts on display, including its beautiful Queen Amidala mini bust. Can’t wait until they send it to me!

Anovos displayed its new high end Star Wars costume reproductions, including its Jango Fett outfit.

But as for the other licensees, particularly the wearable or affordable stuff, fuhgeddaboutit. The exception was a line of belts Stylin’ was hawking. Buckle Down had a ton of different Star Wars belts, including one that shockingly had characters and images from all six Star Wars films! Plus Clone Wars! Jango Fett! Clone troopers! It was too shocking to behold.

I have found, and I’m going to write about it this week, that while merch aimed at older or general audiences is pretending Star Wars is just New Hope and Empire (with Janna and his slaves thrown in on occasion), stuff aimed at kids is still equally Saga.

  2. M. Marshall Says:

I’ve got my eye on the Jedi Temple Guard, Plo Koon (maybe, it depends) and Medal Ceremony Leia.

  3. Dave Strohmenger Says:

The Hallmark Rise of Lord Vader ornament is actually for this year. I saw it at a Hallmark store a few weeks ago.
