Guardians of the Galaxy/PT Trailer Spoof

June 28, 2014

A few weeks ago, there was a spoof of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trailer with the first set of Star Wars films. Now there’s a prequel version, which aside from a couple of eye-rolling Jar Jar jokes, surprisingly avoids beating up on them as a whole.

(If you ask me, these things are spoofs of typical Hollywood trailers. We’ve gone from “in a world where…” to this kind of thing.)

Flashback Friday: “The Saga Begins” Live

June 27, 2014

Weird Al Yankovic scored big with his musical retelling of TPM “The Saga Begins” in 1999 and it’s been part of his act since. Usually he performs it with his other Star Wars hit, “Yoda” and since his 1999 tour, he and his band usually put on Jedi robes during that segment of the show.

I picked this live performance from 2013 for the following reasons: 1. It’s in Columbia, MO, where I spent four years of my existence while attending the University of Missouri. 2. It was at an event put on by famed venue The Blue Note, where I saw many a show and attended many a dance party at its old location and its current location. Oh the stories I could tell. I saw The Red Hot Chili Peppers there months after Hillel Slovak died and they’d just recruited John Frusciante to replace him; back then Frusciante was a skinny mohawked kid. I also saw Chris & Cosey (still the weirdest show I’d ever seen), KMFDM, Fugazi, Dread Zeppelin, The Ocean Blue, The Mighty Lemon Drops, The Cramps, Special Beat (which was members of The Specials and English Beat), and lots of never heard of ’em bands, including one time when I accidentally showed up for a Grateful Dead cover band show. Once Club MTV did a college tour there where two lucky winners got flown out to New York to be on the show. No, I wasn’t one of them.

Anyway, what’s great about this outdoor performance is the audience singing along. You probably will too:

Throwback Thursday: Jimmy Smits on “Pee Wee’s Playhouse”

June 26, 2014

Being a Gen X-er, of course I’ve watched “Pee Wee’s Playhouse,” CBS’s quirky Saturday morning show that was way more entertaining to college students than it was to actual children. It starred Paul Reubens as his famous alter ego and featured many celebrities and soon-to-be-celebrities.

Apparently, Jimmy Smits appeared in a 1990 episode as a repairman brought in to fix Conky the robot. I couldn’t find video, so you’ll have to make-do with this thumbnail I managed to find:

4K Versions Of Clone Wars On The Way?

June 24, 2014

MakingStarWars.net posted a report on Lucasfilm Animation allegedly (not officially confirmed) working on rendering ultra HD versions of Clone Wars Seasons 1-6 for Netflix. It sounds a little wishy washy if/when we’ll ever see these versions, that is if you have one of those really expensive t.v.s that works best with the format.

No word yet on DVD/Blu-Ray releases.

Fan Documentary “Don’t Feed The Trolls”

June 23, 2014

Liz Welch, who helped make the fan documentary “Don’t Feed The Trolls,” dropped a line about her project, which is showing at various cons throughout the country:

My name’s Liz Welch and my team and I have just finished work on a documentary about fandoms. The film’s called Don’t Feed the Trolls and it shows the real world world of fandom communities.

The film addresses what trolls are and promotes the anti-bullying sentiment in fandoms.

There’s an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for exhibiting the film. The film’s Facebook page is here.

Star Wars Villains To Participate In “Villains Unleashed”

Going to be in Orlando late August? You might want to check out an event at Disney World on Aug. 23 called “Villains Unleashed,” which runs from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. and features a whole roster of Disney baddies, including a bunch of Star Wars villains. Prequel villains slated to appear include Darth Maul, Jango Fett, Zam Wessell, Palpatine, and Clone Wars’s Asajj Ventress. (No Dooku? Bummer.) Get more info here.

Temuera Morrison In Fett Flick?

June 21, 2014

Jedi News posted this rumor by way of the Boba Fett Fan Club that Temuera Morrison is on IMDB’s cast list for this Fett spinoff movie set for December 2016.

Sure, it would be great if it was true. Morrison is a pretty good actor and more than capable of playing the part. If Lucas was in charge, I’d have no doubt either he or Daniel Logan would be in the film. But Lucas is not in charge. And as Ep VII star Daisy Ridley tweeted the other day, anybody (with access) can enter info on the IMBD. We shall see but I’m very skeptical.

The Clone Wars has scored two daytime Emmys last night; one had already been awarded to Christopher Voy for his work animating the show. The other was for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program.

Congratulations to everyone who worked on the show. You deserve it and more.
