Excerpt from “Glittering Images”

Here’s an excerpt from Camille Paglia’s “Glittering Images” book, specifically the goods on Star Wars. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll wonder why the hell this woman hasn’t been given a panel at a Celebration:

The Mustafar duel, which took months of rehearsal, with fencing and saber drills conducted by the sword master Nick Gillard, was executed by Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor at lightning speed. It is virtuosic dance theater, a taut pas de deux between battling brothers, convulsed by attraction and repulsion. Their thrusts, parries, and slashes are like passages of aggressive speech. It is one of the most passionate scenes ever filmed between two men, with McGregor close to weeping.

Pretty much everything else she’s ever said would probably ruffle feathers left and right (figuratively and literally), wouldn’t it? I’m glad to see some more serious academic looks at SW, but she’s controversial on a whole range of sexual and political subjects to say the least. I’d be happy if we could just get Anne Lancashire to finally write a piece on ROTS and finish the good work she started in her previous Film Criticism magazine pieces.

There are people who consider Paglia a gadfly, even a troll. I just think she says what she believes and doesn’t care what box it falls into or if it goes against “conventional wisdom.” Like I said, she loves Star Wars and she expresses an unabashed enthusiasm for the saga that even alleged fans have been too cowed into expressing anymore.

I wouldn’t mind Lancashire’s take on ROTS either.

Paglia says what other people don’t want to hear, which I admire.

I admire Paglia as well, and frankly enjoy much of her stuff (made for more interesting reading than a lot of my dry, undergraduate materials). But I doubt she’d fit in with a fan celebration thing. Maybe if there were more SW happenings that were more for adult fans.

Great refreshing read. Thanks. This site is THE best! 🙂

Well, thank you for that, Camille. I hope there’s thousands out there who feel the same way but aren’t hard-core fans and don’t know about forums and sites like this one. Of course the ones who get the play, the hits, the endless quotations are the ones who don’t even know the story that well, but jump on that negative crap bandwagon anyway. Did you know some of them call us “Warsies” as in Trekkies? BARF!
