(Mostly) Offline Until 7/9

June 29, 2012

Unless something big happens, I will not be updating SWPAS until 7/9 since I’m visiting family out of town for the next week.  I may still do short updates on Twitter and on Facebook.  May the 4th of July be with you!

Time To Retire “Star Wars Trilogy”

June 27, 2012

Pull up a chair for another fandom pet peeve: “Star Wars Trilogy.”

If this was 1998, I wouldn’t object because there were at the time three completed Star Wars films in existence.

But it’s 20-freakin’-12. There are six, count ’em, SIX Star Wars films, plus one Clone Wars feature-length pilot. The term “Star Wars trilogy” became irrelevant as of May 19, 1999. Now, many people at least acknowledge the existence of all of the films even as they make distinctions between the “original trilogy” or “classic trilogy” and the “prequel trilogy.” Those distinctions are imperfect and even though I run this site, I’d be very happy the day those distinctions break down and the saga is accepted as a whole.

Anyone using “Star Wars Trilogy” now is either an ignoramus or is flat out refusing to even acknowledge Episodes I-III exist. It’s more than saying, “I didn’t like the prequels.” It’s a boycott against reality. When Mondo did those posters a while back, I didn’t buy any of them. Not only was it because they just did posters for Eps IV-VI and blew off the rest of the series, but they billed it as posters from the “Star Wars Trilogy.” I’m sure Mondo didn’t spend the past 14 years in a cave in Tora Bora, so there’s no other explanation other than they are a bunch of prequel haters who won’t even acknowledge Eps I-III as part of the saga. It’s an insult to saga fans and to George Lucas.

Which gets to my next point…yesterday I saw a Tweet from the official Star Wars Twitter account about some GIFs based on Eps IV-VI:

“A #StarWars Trilogy gif? Can’t. Stop. Watching.”

Now if there’s anyone (anything?) that should NOT be using “Star Wars Trilogy” anymore it’s anything official out of Lucasfilm. Hello, THEY should know it’s a long-since outdated term. Just say “Star Wars gif” or “OT gif” and we’ll get the message to skip the link. But it once again emphasizes that despite whatever they tell us, they don’t treat the movies equally.

Moves Like Jar Jar

June 26, 2012

Eddie at The Phantom Menace: The Holiday asked me to do something for “Jar Jar June” (now coming to an end) and instead of writing something profound, I came up with a filk. Please pardon the bad Gunganese and silly lyrics, for I haven’t written a filk in a long time and to be honest, I don’t like Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” but for the filking opportunity it created. If you’re really good, I’ll post my unpublished midichlorian filk from 2000.

Moves Like Jar Jar

ust shoot for the stars
If it feelsa right
And aim for meesa heart
If yousa feel like
And take meesa away and make it okey-day
I swear meesa behave

Yousa wanted control
So wesa waited
I put on a show
Now I Bombad General
Yousa say I’m a kid
My ego is maxi-big
I don’t give an icky icky goo
And it goes like this

[Chorus:]
Take me by the tongue
And I’ll know you
Kiss mesa, I’m a klutz
And I’ll show you

All the moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar

I don’t need to try to throw a booma
Look into my eyestalks I’ll own yousa

With them moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar

[Verse 2:]
Maybe it’s hard
When the gasser’s broken and scarred
Nothing feels right
But when yousa with me
I’ll make yousa believe
That I’ve got the key

Oh
So get in the bongo
Wesa can ride it
Wherever yousa want
Get inside it
And yousa want to steer
But look out for the Opee Sea Creature
I’ll take it from here (Oh! Yeah yeah!)
And it goes like this (Uh)

[Chorus:]
Take me by the tongue
And I’ll know you (Uh)
Kiss mesa, I’m a klutz
And I’ll show you

All the moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar

I don’t need to try to throw a booma (Oh, yeah)
Look into my eyestalks I’ll own yousa

With them moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar (Yeah yeah)
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar

[Bridge:]
Yousa wanna know how to make mesa smile
Give me a brisky morning munchen to eat
And if I share mesa secret
You’re gonna have to keep it
Nobody else can see this

So watch and learn
I won’t show yousa twice
Bouncing from head to toe, swinging nice
But if I share my secret
You’re gonna have to keep it
Nobody else can see this (Ay! Ay! Ay! Aaay!)

And it goes like this

[Chorus:]
Take me by the tongue (Take me by the tongue)
And I’ll know you
Kiss mesa, I’m a klutz
And I’ll show you (Yeah yeah yeah!)

All the moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar
(Oh, yeah)
I don’t need to try to throw a booma
Look into my eyestalks I’ll own yousa

With them moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar
I’ve got the moves like Jar Jar

Clone Wars Hints Dropped

June 22, 2012

I don’t know when we’ll see these–Season Five or Season Six–but here are a couple of hints on future Clone Wars episodes seen on the internets.

First, there’s a photo on Anna Graves’s Facebook page of her with Dave Filoni and Daniel Logan at a recording session. Graves plays Duchess Satine but she also plays bounty hunter Sugi. (Logan, of course, plays Boba Fett.) Is Boba getting some Mandalorian revenge on Satine? Does Sugi cross paths with the young Fett? Could it be a new character along with the Fett? Time will tell!

Then on Twitter, I see this from Kyle Newman and Jaime King:

TRUTH! “@Jaime_King: Guess who plays husband and wife (secret species) on #StarWars The Clone Wars? @kyle_newman and I!” @starwars

King has had a recurring role as Aurra Sing but this sounds like a new character. Secret species, eh? Lemmee guess…it’s Mr. and Mrs. Ben Quadinaros!

Ugh, I Hate To Do This, But…

June 18, 2012

I’d really much rather post about Star Wars and not about people posting here, but I guess I have to.

To clarify for all of you, I don’t regard SWPAS the same as any other site where it’s an open soapbox. I do that and I know what will happen to this site in a hurry. My biggest irritation with other sites–including non-Star Wars/non-fandom ones–is how they can be lousy with trolls, endless arguments, and spammers. I don’t want SWPAS to a battleground where there’s an endless pro-PT vs. anti-PT war. I think we’re all sick of that.

I view SWPAS the same way I view my other accounts; it’s like my home and I expect guests in my home to behave. I don’t want you to come into my house and start berating me or pick fights with my other guests. Maybe it’s a different concept from how younger people view internet sites, but you’re going to have to live with the way I do things here.

I hate being an enforcer. I often start second-guessing myself and wonder if I’ve been too harsh. But I guess from now on I’m going to have to be a hard@SS. Below are the rules of the site again. They’re also at the link way off to the right of the page. Take the time to read them, please.

This site is about one thing and it’s about celebrating the Star Wars prequels and the saga as a whole. In order to accomplish this goal, please keep these rules–created by endless Senate committees–in mind:

1. No bashing or excessive criticism of the films.

This includes but is not limited to the quality of performances, writing, direction, story, etc.. If you don’t like the movies or want to use this as a soapbox for your gripes, this site is NOT for you. Gripe away on your own site or where they allow it; don’t do it here. No insults directed at the cast either.

2. No bashing or excessive criticism of George Lucas and his family.

This includes but is not limited to referring to him as “greedy,” “a hack,” “a lousy director,” etc. or cutting comments on his appearance, his family, or anything personal.

3. Commenters must be polite and civil.

There is to be no flaming, trolling, baiting, insults, excessive nitpicking, contrarianism, and all-around smarta–ery directed at other commenters or the webmiss. Save it for Sheldon and the Comic Book Guy.

Even though with Star Wars, it’s inevitable religion and politics will come up, please use common sense when discussing these issues and keep it relevant to the Star Wars universe. There are going to be people of all kinds of beliefs here and we don’t need to be smashing chairs over each other’s heads. If I link to a politically-tinged piece, I will pre-warn you.

There is to be no racist, sexist, or other demeaning language. Keep it clean; use asterisks instead of spelling out f-bombs or something. Do not swear at other posters or the webmiss.

Threats of violence, rape, murder, or other criminal activity posted on the site or sent privately will be reported to the authorities.

4. No spam or sales pitches

Spam will be instantly deleted. No one is to use comments to sell products/services or to contact commenters privately to sell products/services. If you want to promote your site, make sure it’s relevant AND friendly to Star Wars.

5. No Off-Topic/Irrelevant Posts

If a discussion goes off-topic, I will ask that the conversation continue elsewhere. Off-topic comments/thread-jacking will be deleted.

Facebook Rules

Facebook comments and posts must meet all of the above rules or they will be deleted. If you want to promote your group, run it by me privately first. If it’s not relevant to SWPAS, it will be deleted.

Facebook repeat offenders will be banned and reported.

The webmiss is final arbiter of what she considers acceptable and unacceptable and her decision is final.

IF YOU’RE NOT SURE, ASK!

Where Are The Padme Dolls?

June 16, 2012

Please do read this from Erika at the Star Wars Shrine. It’s really more about ignoring the female collectors’ market but let’s face it, Padmé gets no love from the collectibles world. (And I’m still waiting for a 12″ Bespin Leia.)
