10 Years of AOTC: Review Part 2

Here’s more of Grant Elliott’s piece:

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s investigation led him to the mysterious planet of Kamino, which much to the dismay of Obi-Wan and Jocasta Nu (Alethea McGrath), who was the Chief Librarian of the Jedi Archives, could not find the location coordinates of the planet on the Galactic map that was stored in the archives. Obi-Wan then seeks counsel from Jedi Master Yoda while he was training Jedi younglings (young children beginning their Jedi training), where they both conclude from the evidence that the planet must exist, but the knowledge of it must have been erased from the archives by someone who used to be a Jedi. Obi-Wan then takes his Jedi Starfighter, and leaves Coruscant in search of the planet Kamino, in which when he does find it discovers it to be a planet where the majority of the surface is covered by water.

When Obi-Wan lands his Jedi Starfighter on Kamino he immediately is greeted by the strange elusive alien race of Kaminoans, who are the native race of the planet Kamino. Obi-Wan is then escorted by a Kaminoan named Taun We to another Kaminoan named Lama Su, who was the Prime Minister of Kamino. Obi-Wan learns from Lama Su that at the behest of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, who was mysteriously killed ten-year prior shortly after the Battle of Naboo, set a contract on behalf of the Jedi High Council for the Kaminoans to create a massive clone army for the Galactic Republic. Even though this takes Obi-Wan by surprise he plays along so he can uncover the details of this clone army which has been in creation over the past ten-years without the knowledge of the JediHigh Council. He learns that the Kaminoans have been creating this clone army from the DNA genetic material from a bounty hunter named Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison), who learned his highly skilled combat mercenary skills from an ancient race of warriors known as the Mandalorians. When Obi-Wan informed the Jedi High Council of this news it greatly disturbed both Jedi Master Yoda and Jedi Master Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson). Yoda suggested to master Windu that the dark-side of the Force had gained a major foothold in the Republic, and that they should keep this a secret from the Galactic Senate, due to the fact that the enemies of Jedi would increase beyond the Sith, who were conspiring to destroy the Jedi Order, if others discovered the weakness of the Jedi.

During the time that Obi-Wan was on Kamino investigating the clone army that was created by the Kaminoans, Anakin Skywalker was guarding Padme Amidala while they were hiding out at a private remote location on Naboo. There with nothing but time on their hands they discuss the ethical nature of galactic politics, and argued with each other over the virtuous merits of a democratic government verses a “benign” dictatorship. It is here that the infamous couple first fall in love with each other, but whereas Anakin was willing to violate his oath to the Jedi Order by indulging in a secret romantic and sexual relationship with her, it was Padme who maintained the ethical responsibilities of both of their respective offices and reminded Anakin of the consequence of what a relationship would do to the both of them.

While Anakin was asleep that particular night he received an intense dream concerning the fate of his mother, which had been haunting him for the past ten-years ever since he left her on the desert planet Tatooine when he left with Qui-Gon Jinn to become a Jedi. The following morning when they both woke Anakin informs Padme of his dreams, and informs her that he feels compelled to disobey the orders of the Jedi High Council to go to Tatooine in search of his mother. Padme agrees to accompany him on his quest, and they both leave Naboo and go to the planet Tatooine, where when they arrive they seek out a Toydarian named Watto, who was Anakin’s former slave-master, in inquiry of his mother. Watto informed Anakin that years ago he sold his mother Shmi Skywalker (Pernilla August) to a moisture farmer named Cliegg Lars (Jack Thompson), who freed her from slavery and then married her. After learning from Watto the location of the Lars moisture farm Anakin and Padme go there, where they meet Cliegg Lars, as well as his son Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) and his girlfriend Beru Whitesun (Bonnie Piesse).

Cliegg informs both Anakin and Padme that a while back, before they came, that a group of his moisture farmers, including Shmi, were out in the field doing work when a group of Tusken Raiders, an indigenous race of Tatooine, ambushed the team, resulting in many of them being killed. Shmi was taken captive by a tribe of Tusken Raiders, and in spite of the fact that Cliegg has spent most of his time searching for her it was to no avail. Cliegg expressed that he had given up hope that Shmi was still alive, but Anakin could not accept this, so he took off alone into the desert of Tatooine to look for his mother Shmi. Anakin traced leads from his contact with Jawas, another indigenous race of Tatooine, where he found her barely alive being held captive in a Tusken Raider camp. When Anakin tried to free her from her bonds and rescue her she was to physically weak, and she tragically died in her son’s arms. This immediately caused extreme anger and hatred in Anakin, as he took out his rage by slaughtering the entire camp of Tusken Raiders with his lightsaber, murdering all the men, women, and children in his vengeance.

Back on Kamino the Jedi Master Yoda and Jedi Master Mace Windu ordered Obi- Wan Kenobi to arrest Jango Fett and bring him back to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant in order to interrogate him. But in the process of trying to arrest him Jango Fett caught wind of Obi-Wan’s agenda, and attempted to flee Kamino with his cloned son Boba Fett (Daniel Logan), in which a violent confrontation broke out between Obi-Wan and Jango Fett. Jango and Boba were able to make their escape but not before Obi-Wan was able to attach a tracking devise to their Slave 1 ship, in which he traced them to the rocky planet
of Geonosis. After Obi-Wan was able to secretly land his Jedi Starship on Geonosis he was able, through subterfuge, sneak into a Separatist compound hidden inside a carved out mountain. There he overheard a top-secret meeting between Count Dooku, the supreme leader of the Separatist movement, with the main alien leaders of The Confederacy for Independent Systems, who were made up of the various galactic organizations of the Corporate Alliance, Trade Federation, Commerce Guild, InterGalactic Banking Clan and the Techno Union. After learning of their plans he tries to warn the Galactic Senate and the Jedi High Council back on Coruscant, but he was intercepted by a droideka and taken captive by the insect Geonosian race.
Meanwhile back on Tatooine Anakin brings the body of his mother Shmi back to the Lars moister farm, where he and the Lars family bury her body on the property. There Anakin and Padme received Obi-Wan’s transmission from Geonosis, and in spite of the fact that the Jedi High Council instructs Anakin to remain where he is at, Anakin and Padme feel that since Tatooine is much closer in distance to Geonosis than Coruscant, which was many more light-years in distance, that they would preemptively try to go to Geonosis and rescue Obi-Wan. But this only resulted in the both of them getting captured, in which Anakin and Padme were put on trial by the Geonosians and the leading members of the Separatist, in which in the name of the Separatist and their ideological cause it was decided that Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme were to be executed. The Geonosians escorted Anakin and Padme out to join Obi-Wan in a gladiatorial like arena so they could all be put to death by exotically aggressive carnivorous animals for the perverse entertainment of the Geonosians and their Separatist guest.
Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme were able to free themselves from their bonds, and their skills gave them the ability to stay alive while all the exotically carnivorous animals were released into the arena to attack and kill the prisoners, but soon all three of them became overwhelmed. Then at the “eleventh hour” Jedi Master Mace Windu shows up on Geonosis, along with a small army of Jedi warriors that he had amassed, in order to force the Separatist into a surrender. Count Dooku refused to surrender, and the Separatist and Geonosians fought back, bringing out the entire droid army to fight the Jedi. The Jedi warriors fought valiantly against the both the Geonosians and the massive droid army of the Separatist, but not long after they to were overwhelmed, with over half the Jedi army killed in combat. Count Dooku ordered Mace Windu and the rest of the surviving Jedi to surrender, but Mace Windu refused to let the Jedi Knights under his command to be sold into slavery by the Separatist. So Count Dooku gives the order for the droid army to execute the rest of the surviving Jedi, but just then the skies of Geonosis fill up with Republic battle cruisers as Yoda arrives with a battle ready clone army from Kamino, and they drive the droid army away from the surviving Jedi. There begins the Battle of Geonosis, which begins the galaxy wide conflict infamously known as the Clone Wars.

After an intense battle between the clone army of the Republic and the droid army of the Separatist the Republic gained the upper-hand and were able to drive the Separatist forces into retreat, in which all the Separatist leaders made a hasty escape from Geonosis. Count Dooku was the last of the Separatist leaders to leave Geonosis, in which Obi-Wan and Anakin vehemently pursued him, in hopes that his capture would bring a swift end to the Clone Wars. When Obi-Wan and Anakin caught up with Count Dooku he stood his ground, and with his many long years of experience in the Jedi arts, as well as the powers he learned through the dark-side of the Force, he proved to strong an opponent for the two Jedi. Both Obi-Wan and Anakin were severely injured by Count Dooku’s powers, and Anakin even had his arm severed by Dooku’s lightsaber. When things looked the bleakest for the two Jedi that is when Jedi Master Yoda showed up to confront Count Dooku personally. With Dooku’s arrogance and overconfidence in his knowledge of the dark-side of the Force he warned Yoda not to get in his way, in which a conflict ensured between Yoda and Count Dooku. He underestimated the Jedi Master, and in the end Yoda’s knowledge of the light-side of the Force proved overwhelming to Count Dooku, in which Dooku created a quick diversion so he could escape in his spacecraft.

At the end we see Count Dooku make his way back to Coruscant, where as his alias Darth Tyranus meets with his Sith Master Darth Sidious, where they discuss their next move towards absolute galactic power, now that the Clone Wars have begun. Yoda, Obi- Wan, and Mace Windu, while in the Jedi Temple, contemplate the negative consequences that the Clone Wars will have on all the citizens of the galaxy. On Geonosis the Republic prepares for war as the currently existing clone army is loaded onto several Republic battle cruisers, as they lift off from the planet and head out into deep space. Then due to the intense experience of the Battle of Geonosis Padme breaks down emotionally and gives into her love for Anakin, where they marry in secret on her home planet of Naboo, where the marriage ceremony was performed by a cleric of Naboo, and witnessed only by the droids C-3PO and R2D2.
