Salon.com On Anti-Lucas/PT Flick

(H/T may_child and HotAir.com)

If you dare, you may suffer through this article on “The People Vs. George Lucas,” a documentary featuring anyone at all with a grudge against Lucas spouting off against the Flanneled One and the prequels. You can also leave a comment if you like, hint hint.

Salon has never passed an opportunity to beat up on Lucas, who was referred to as the most hated filmmaker ever. Yes, even more than Michael Bay, Michael Moore, Oliver Stone, Uwe Boll, or even James Cameron. But this whole project stunk to high heaven for me from the get-go.

The filmmaker, for lack of a better term, sent spam e-mails to a lot of folks, me included. I declined to participate because I just KNEW this would be a basher fest. It’s hard not to see that coming with a title like “The People vs. George Lucas.” I wanted no part of a film out to trash the guy, even to give the “pro” side. After all, there could never be a guarantee I’d make the final cut nor could you ever predict how your statements are going to be edited if you do happen to make it. Based on what was in the spam e-mail, the filmmaker was absolutely coming from a basher’s perspective.

No I haven’t seen the doc. But I did read two reviews of the film, one on AICN and one on Film School Rejects. Both were written by PT-haters and both pretty much agreed it was a bash-fest. AICN found it wasn’t very constructive and would just reopen old wounds, while the other site loved the fact it was “an indictment” of Lucas (for what, molesting kids?) until there’s some happy talk at the end about how the movies inspired them, blah blah blah. If two bashers say it’s anti-Lucas, then I have no reason not to believe them.

I mentioned to may_child that these fanboys aren’t motivated so much by a “love” for Star Wars as they are an obsession with being “right.” How else to explain their fixation on hating a movie for all of this time? This doc is just feeding into that and it’s supremely ironic that in the Salon interview, the filmmaker claims he got sent death threats. I can only imagine the death threats Lucas gets on a daily basis.

You see, it isn’t that there are people out there who don’t love the PT like we do. It’s that too many of these angry, disgruntled fanboys have done everything possible to burn the whole village down so SW fandom isn’t all that fun to me anymore. Depending on how things go, Celebration V might be my last. I rarely associate with fan groups these days. I’m happier going to events like SW Weekends that are mostly “regular” folks. SW fandom used to be fun, inspired, and engaging. Now it bores and annoys me.

Unfortunately, I feel the exact same way.

The way some people go on about Lucas, you’d think he were a child molester or war criminal rather than a director who made a few cheesy space flicks that some people disliked. Jeez.

i agree that being a Star Wars fan just isn’t as much fun as it once was. anytime a ‘Star Wars’ conversation comes up in mixed company, i find myself counting the moments until it is over, and trying to find ways to hurry it along, just so i don’t have to sit through the inevitable PT-hate, or defend my tastes YET AGAIN.
