As you likely know by now, the Daytime Emmys turned out to be the charm for “The Clone Wars” as the canceled show scored two wins, one for David Tennant’s guest turn and one for outstanding special animated series. It’s about time the show finally scored some recognition from the industry, but it’s a shame it had to happen after the program was shut down.

However, it does give a little bit more weight to possibly bringing the show back sometime in the future. After all, Star Trek never won an Emmy and neither did Firefly.

In October 1980, one half of the sister duo that published a zine called “Against The Sith” wrote a rant called “The Death of Star Wars.” The breathlessly gossipy Fanlore wiki had an entry on this essay that might have indicated why this turned out to be the final issue of the zine. The highlights were that it would be a waste of time and energy (little did she know it would be a lot longer than nine years to get around to the prequels), there would be no surprises, and the saga should look forward (oh and the author personally didn’t care)

If the prequels, with an entirely new set of characters, finds an audience, it will most likely be a different audience from the present one. We love these characters, now, not the dead past. Wc look for adventure, now, not the telling of a history. After JEDI, the prequels will essentially be the story of ghosts.”

Gee, maybe that’s why I love the prequels…I love ghost stories! I watch like 10 paranormal shows a week!

All kidding aside, Star Wars was never pure sf and perhaps the author might have missed that “A LONG TIME AGO” part of the movies. Star Wars is mythology that just happens to use sf window dressing. It seems to me the author was a wee bit attached to one character and couldn’t see the saga much further past him. One wonders what she thought of ROTJ much less what came after it or the prospect of movies that finally take place in that forward looking future she was rambling about. I have no idea because after they stopped publishing “Against The Sith,” they disappeared into the mists of fandom time.

This particular zine and its publishers/authors were particularly notorious for their “interesting” views on Star Wars. A friend of mine who collected zines told me about their infamous Leia-bashing issue and she loaned it to me for laughs and giggles. Now, Leia is up there with Anakin as my fave Star Wars character. My friend said I had to see it in order to believe it. Sure enough there was a foldout chart listing several characters who appeared in ANH and TESB and each character was rated on various virtues like courage, dependability, honor, honesty, etc.. Yoda rated dead last on their list. Right down there with Yoda were Darth Vader, Tarkin, and you guessed it, Leia. I had no idea she was cowardly, dishonest, dishonorable, and so forth. My gut feeling is that they were ticked off at her because she hooked up with Han not their guy Luke. You’d think they would be happy he was free from encumbrances, but nooooo. Remember, ROTJ hadn’t come out yet so they didn’t know about the sibling thing and well, that probably would’ve made them mad too.

But their biggest claim to fame in the short time they were in the zine world was their furious open letter sent to various zine editors denouncing TESB. They hated it so much the first time they saw it, they not only condemned the film, they demanded that everyone boycott the film and that Lucas destroy every copy of it. After seeing it a few more times, they toned down their hate for it but I still think they didn’t care for Han/Leia (Leia, you tramp you!) and well, they weren’t on the Star Wars bus much longer after that. At least you have to respect their decision instead of trying to make everyone else miserable.

Dorling Kindersley is putting out an expanded edition of the AOTC Visual Dictionary, likely a legacy of the now-canceled AOTC re-release. But if you’re going to see it at Celebration Europe II, you’ll get it in time for the con!
