A few months ago, William Shatner and Carrie Fisher engaged in a battle of the franchises. The battle continues, albeit in a much friendlier way, with Liam Neeson and Patrick Stewart. This time the topic is toys on British t.v.’s “The Graham Norton Show,” video of which you can see here. Of course, Qui-Gon wins! (I remember those banks! I have the Obi-Wan one.)

January 30 was the street date for TPM 3D toys and I checked out a local Toys R Us to see the goodies. Action figures are buy two, get one free this week and there were a lot of new figures not only from TPM but also from Clone Wars! I also saw some new scooters, framed pictures, a kids’ 3D tee shirt, and Hasbro’s new Fighter Pods. I loved seeing the huge Maul and Obi-Wan on the display. It’s like reliving 1999!

Star Wars Insider’s TPM Extravaganza

Miraculously, my copy of Star Wars Insider #131 arrived on time. Subscribers got their copies today and the issue hits newsstands tomorrow. I flipped through it and it’s chockfull of articles about TPM, which is good.

But I was annoyed with the Jar Jar article…it actually praises “The Phantom Edit.” Shame on them.

#10–”The Saga Begins” Propelled Sales Of Weird Al’s “Running With Scissors”

Weird Al Yankovic has built a solid career for over 30 years cranking out parodies, from 1980′s “My Bologna” to last year’s Lady Gaga parody “Perform This Way.” In 1999, Weird Al was as caught up in Star Wars mania as anyone else and just had to do a song. (He’d already recorded “Yoda” back in 1984.) He couldn’t see TPM in time to record the song so he cobbled the lyrics together based on spoilers he found on the internet. It turned out to be remarkably accurate.

The song was a big hit on kids’ Radio Disney that summer and its popularity made the album “Running With Scissors” one of Weird Al Yankovic’s biggest hits (only “Bad Hair Day” in 1996 and “Straight Outta Lynwood” in 2006 charted higher). To this day, Weird Al and his band put on Jedi robes to perform “The Saga Begins” and “Yoda” during their live shows.

#11–TPM Is The Second Film Ever To Gross Over $400 Million In Its Initial Release

While it’s true that ANH was the first movie to break the $400 million barrier (North America) in 1997, that was with the help of the Special Editions. The first to do it on its initial run was “Titanic” (also the first movie to break $500 million and $600 million). TPM was second to break the $400 million barrier, a year and change later.
