With all of the concern over the fate of our fave t.v. show, the third part of What Culture’s 10 Ways The Prequels Made Star Wars A Better Saga slipped in under the radar. At least my radar, heh heh. The last part focuses on ROTS.

I still disagree with his number 7 from AOTC about the OT Stormtroopers not being clones. Besides the height thing to suggest clones, Lucas had Jango bump his head to suggest the OT Stormtroopers inherited that trait from him. Then their is also the old 1978 LFL article that outright states Stormtroopers are clones, man made men, and even describes alot of what we end up seeing in AOTC of how they are grown. It even states the Empire even has a retirement planet for them. Lastly, in AOTC itself we see a batch of 5 year old clones who would not be fighting age yet by the end of the clone wars, and we also see embryos that would only be 3 by ROTS. But it just seems alot of people don’t like Stormtroopers to be clones, even though it is has been heavily suggested by Lucas for years.

You do realize that the Stormtroopers have a terrible aim in the OT? Sure some of them are clones of Jango, but several are dead by the time we get to A New Hope. Cody would be like 60 due to his accelerated growth and that’s pretty old to be a soldier. It’s likely that several were recruited men, which would explain why the Stormtroopers are kind of an embarrassment from what the Grand Army of the Republic was.

Clone troopers = great shots
Stormies = not so much
It takes a lot more people to keep an Empire subjugated so I’m guessing the stormtroopers could have been clones of other people and/or conscripts and/or recruits.

I like the explanation “Battlefront II” came up with:
“Officially, there was no Clone uprising on Kamino…”
Basically after the event that officially didn’t happen, the gene pool was diluted a bit, with only a few battalions remaining Jango’s “sons”.

Well, there is the theory that the stormtroopers were poor marksmen on the Death Star because they were ordered to. After all, we know that the Empire wanted our heroes to flee to find the secret base of the Rebellion.

I didn’t bother to read the comments but, I put my two cents in.

Again the film states accelerated growth, not accelerated aging, two different things, but easy to confuse. So they can have a shorter childhood but still age at a normal rate at adulthood. So a clone would be 60 at 50, not 60 at 30. Many of the OT Stormtroopers had great aim (the ones that boarded the Rebel Blockade Runner, the Snowtroopers on Hoth) while the clone troops guarding the Jedi temple in ROTS had pretty bad aim. Lucas himself said he thought it would be funny that the Stormtroopers inherited their head bumping trait from Jango.
Also I noticed no one in Episodes 2 or 3 ever use the term clonetrooper, closest uttered is clone troops. Even Lucas himself never seemed to use that term, he has always seemed to call all 3 phases, Stormtroopers. There is also the order Lucasfilm gave to Hasbro to give all the new Stromtrooper figures and other Imps removable helmets with Jango clone heads. With no more Clone Wars, the clones would be killed at a much slower rate, and Paply could always have had clone production cranked up to subjugate the Empire for greater security. The Jedi for the most part and CIS are kaput, only a small number of rinky dink Rebels to worry about.
The only thing about Stormtroopers being recruits is from the EU that I can find. Nothing in the films seem to suggest recruits for them, though officers and AT-ST drivers do seem to be recruits. Perhaps only clones can wear Stormtrooper armor? Non clones wear different uniforms?
Also I disagree about the Jedi comissioning the Clone army. I thought the film made it pretty clear that Dooku, used Sifo Dyas’ name to make the order. Of course this is all just my two cents and I don’t want to force anyone to agree with my opinion like a hateboy would. But I do get sick of the EU changing and revising stuff in the films. Like the EU stating Biggs having been a TIE pilot while the ANH deleted scene states he was joinning the Rebels to avoid being drafted by the Empire, which would mean he never served the Empire. But we know which version is mainstream, and it isn’t Lucas’ version. But I ranted long enough LOL.
Lastly, really, don’t read those comments, I deeply regreted reading just the first one!

Here is the link to the 1978 article, it is a neat read.

Also increasing the size of your forces after a war doesn’t make much sense, it make more sense to do so during the war, just my two cents.

To point 4 (Anakin’s turn to Vader): as far as I know, Anakin really believed that the Jedi were trying to take over the republic in the first draft/the scenes originally filmed. Later on, it was changed to the version we know (and I like; I just think GL could have kept or emphasized the first idea in the final version. In my book, Anakin thinks the whole “the Jedi betray the republic” stuff at the latest on Mustafar – maybe to justify his actions, maybe because of Palpatine’s teachings that everyone seeks for power – the Jedi, too – and maybe because his thoughts are clouded by the dark side. And probably because of all three reasons.)
