I’ve seen this new Miss Dior ad with Natalie Portman on t.v. a couple of times but I didn’t know, until Jedi News pointed it out, that the ad was directed by Sofia Coppola, daughter of Francis Ford, film director, and ex-handmaiden. The music’s from Grace Jones, but she was never in Star Wars. Unfortunately.
Guys, please, no slobbering on the screen:
Update: The guy is apparently Nash Edgerton, Joel’s brother and prequel stunt double.

and that’s Uncle Owen – Joel Edgerton’s brother, Nash, as the “guy”
Natalie is just always so gorgeous.

OMG, no way! Really?? It’s a veritable PT reunion!

This is freakin AWESOME!!!
See now why dont things like this get the publicity they deserve in the so called “fan” community out there?! Its because the only actual SW fans are right here on this site and the blogs attached to it thats the real reason why.
That kid who played the young uncle owen is doing GREAT for himself showing up in zero dark 30 and movies everywhere as well as virtually the whole cast and supporting cast of the PT.
See that idolized woman in the expensive perfume ad who is now world famous? She wouldn’t be there right now and you wouldn’t even recognize her name if it wasn’t for George Lucas and Star Wars and everyone knows it no matter how afraid they are to admit it!
The woman directing the ad is none other than the beautiful sofia coppla so that also tells you alot about hwo this whole ad got hooded up.
This is only one more small example.

This is so true! If anything the PT bolstered the careers of many more of its actors/crew than the OT did. And yet, no one but a select few ever recognize this. And you’re right about Joel Edgerton; it took me a while to realize that he was actually Owen Lars running around punching people, shooting people, or adopting strange plant-children. I can’t tell you how many time I’ve seen Joel Edgerton in some trailer for an upcoming theatrical release. Warrior, The Thing, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Zero Dark 30, and the upcoming Great Gatsby…
Come to think of it, his name would probably draw in a significant crowd by now, and with one or two more big hits, he could be “the next big thing.” Ya know, since Disney did The Odd Life of Timothy Green, with Joel as a leading character, perhaps they could bring him back into the Star Wars fold. He played an adoptive father in Timothy Green, and LO AND BEHOLD he’s and adoptive uncle in Star Wars!
I’m a-thinkin’ that the spin-off film that Ewan talked about with Obi-Wan being alone in the desert could actually happen one of these days. Picture it: Ewan in the desert doing who-knows-what. Add in a scene with him talking to Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon’s Force Ghost!!! Then add in a few interesting scenes with a now middle-aged Owen and Beru (the awesome Bonnie Piesse) as the female lead. Sprinkle in some fan-favorites like Jabba the Hutt, and/or some bounty hunters. Hell, they could even show Sebulba skulking around, Watto could do a fly-by in the background, and we could meet Kitster or Wald (Warwick Davis!!) again! Come on Disney, if you’re gonna make a spin-off, make something like this happen!

I agree with both of you.
Still there are hateboys claiming the PT “ruined” some careers. I’m still laughing at people who want to tell me Natalie Portman had “problems” getting jobs after the PT. Those haters can’t even read, obviously.
The only actor who kind of fell behind is Hayden, which is unfortunate because I liked him as a person. But you can’t really blame Star Wars because he was still cast in Jumper afterwards….
I’m sure there are great careers lying ahead of THW’s cast too.

Hayden did not “skyrocket,” and Star Wars did cast a long kind of “typecast” shadow over him. however, unlike Jake Lloyd, Hayden did not quit acting and he has not (as for as I know) expressed any negativity towards Lucas or the prequels. And without Star Wars, …well Hayden wouldn’t have ever broken through at all.
When comparing him to his original trilogy counterpart, he certainly has done more than Mark Hamill though, at least as far as films are concerned. Hamill’s proved himself as a skilled voice actor and occasional “guest star” after Star Wars, but that’s about it.
After he did Awake (2007) and Jumper (2008), Hayden had a respectable role in Takers (2010) and Vanishing on 7th Street (2011). Granted, except for Jumper and possibly Takers, these films are pretty low-key. He’s set to star in two more low-key films (The Diplomat and Battlecreek), as well as one possibly higher profile film: Outcast. An adventure film like Outcast could be a fun flick, and it very possibly could get a wide theatrical release. So no, he’s not a “huge star,” but he’s still doing steady work, and Star Wars has most definitely helped his career overall.
Hayden made a couple of questionable choices in roles and he didn’t play the game, but if you ask me, he mostly got hosed by our fellow “Star Wars Fans” who showed their appreciation by joining in the geek media internet boot party that destroyed his post-ROTS prospects. You know, the same fans who in one sentence will gush about the OT actors’ awesomeness and in the next sentence snark about Hamill’s career projectory or whine about how Carrie doesn’t look 24 anymore.

It’s amazing how many current stars got their first big international exposure in a prequel film. Ewan McGregor was known only among Brit film fans and Natalie Portman was mostly the dream of 50 year old creepy guys everywhere before they joined the Star Wars team. Samuel L. Jackson now has the highest collective box office take of any actor and Liam Neeson is an action star. I wrote in my LiveJournal recently that Star Wars has a better track record than American Idol.

I know this is unrelated but Her Universe is having a “Fangirl of the Year” Blog and they want us to nominate a fangirl we know and love. I think you should nominate yourself LP.
March 15, 2013 at 7:09 pm |
Nah, I don’t nominate myself for anything. I did nominate other people though.

Man, I love Natalie.
The “no slobbering” was a tad difficult, but luckily they were playing “La Vie En Rose” which I always associate with the first place I heard it: The classic cartoon “Duck! Rabbit! Duck!” where Daffy is humming it while burning “Duck Season” signs. Just enough distraction

You know what? The Bashers are right. The Prequels do suck, and George Lucas should be ashamed for them. Why?
Because Grace Jones wasn’t in them.
In all seriousness, though. She would’ve made the coolest looking Jedi ever.

The Sith would run the second they saw her.

I have a theory that now a days most of the PT hate comes from middle school kids. I swear to god thats what a LOT of it is. Because everyone wants to be the smart ass, cool hipster who “knows better”. Everyone wants to be Randal from clerks. But what they dont even realize is that the whole point of Randal in kevin smiths films is that he LIKES star wars –all of it.
In clerks 2 he is portrayed as the lone person who still appreciates/understands SW who is forced to DEFEND it from ALLLLLLLLL the new generation of punk kids and trolls who think bashing and jugging is the way you be a SW fan when its not at all.
Kevin Smith has even said many times in blogs that as famous as his original clerks one SW reference scene was he still wonders if he somehow contributed to creating a Frankenstein with the newer generation of kids who see that scene and see randal and want to BE him. They want to be the hard edged, hipster cynic type but THEY GOT IT TOTALLY WRONG.
The point in clerks was that they were talking deeply about SW yea, but they were doing it in a tong and cheek in universe way. They were not passing judgment on the artistic intent of the films. George Lucas even states in the dvd commentary of AOTC that he likes that in a way he proved dante and randal right by showing who the “contractors for the death star” were with the geonosians. And like they say in clerks “those contractors knew what they were getting into by taking a job from the evil empire”.
In this way kevin smiths “clerks” was one of the first films made by a director who actually CARES and actually is a REAL SW fan that didnt just “put a SW reference into his movie” like so many do now, but he actually shined a light on and defended (in a comedic way ofcourse) some of the underlying morals there are at the heart of SW by useing a small example of two guys in the hood from the early 90′s taking a conversation of SW as deep as it could go –and actually getting a moral out of it.
Even the fact that Dante says his favorite is ESB (something no one ever even said before clerks come out!) is put in there to show that usually, people only say they favor it so much because of how dark it is and they feel dark because of how unhappy they are with their own lives. And dont ya know randal AGAIN defends ROTJ the film with the true jedi morals in it that gets blown off because of the mere fact that it has so called “muppets” in it.
When a bitter dante tells randal the tired “Empire is the best because its just so dark and deep man” Randal (who when it comes to SW actually does know better/have wisdom) says the words “blasphemy!”. And god is he right. That line (ironically enough) really, REALLY can and does apply to a whole generation of angry young males who dont get the moral behind SW. The Jedi like (yes! light and child friendly!) morals the whole Saga is built on and solidified in Episode 6, Return of the Jedi.
Funniest part is the issue talked about in the scene is an issue Lucas actually got deeper into in the PT what with the “greedy trade federation” and how even outside contractors can be evil by taking blood money and helping evil out.
The saddest part is that even something as simple to grasp as this goes waaay over the heads of the willfully ignorant, angry young males today because the last thing they ever want to allow themselves to see is SW as being related to something nice in life.
Even when George Lucas himself takes the time to discuss the phenomena of “SW references” in pop culture and ADMITS to (in a very silent, round about way) answering his favorite one, the one in clerks.
The more years that go by the more surreal it gets, I swear.
Like Randal says “There is only one return and it is of the Jedi!”
Next time a hater f**** with you tell him that and walk away.
Edited for language.
