Stuart Freeborn died today at the age of 98. Freeborn worked as a makeup artist and a creature effects artist on the first set of Star Wars films, and it’s said Yoda was designed to resemble Freeborn.
Here’s starwars.com video of Freeborn visiting the creature shop on the set of TPM back in 1997:

We’re all just here for now and then gone, but man, the past couple of years have been rough, losing some major Star Wars players–Irvin Kershner, Ralph McQuarrie, and now Stuart Freeborn. How lucky they all were to have made vital contributions to something that has brought millions and millions of people happiness over decades. RIP, Stuart, and thanks for Snaggletooth and Walrusman especially!

Wow! What an interesting life he led: born just barely one month after the outbreak of WW1, worked not only on Star Wars but on the Superman movies, “Dr. Strangelove” (without the use of natural fluids), the Muppet Caper AND The Thief of Baghdad (uncredited). He lived a good life.

“Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not.”
R.I.P. Stuart.
